Overview of Upcoming Fiberworld 2021 Classes (Live Virtual)

As we all know, the Covid pandemic changed the way we live our lives. And we adapted, including the shift of fiber related conferences to being online live events. I’ve been surprised how well both teachers and students have adjusted to this new world of virtual teaching of our fiber crafts. The advantage has been the availability to anybody to take classes as long as they have internet service and a device on which to view the class. Of course, I am looking forward to in-person events…it’s fun to gather at hotel resort settings, knit in the lobby or by the pool, while sharing a meal or drink. But it’s also wonderful to be able to reach a larger group of people, and I am almost positive that sponsors will offer virtual live offerings along with in-person events in the future, so you can choose what works best in your life. Several venues are planning in-person events in 2022 and I’m signing some contracts now, but I can’t mention those specifically yet. What I want to tell you about today are my immediate upcoming virtual classes.

FIBERWORLD 2021

https://fiberworldshow.com/

Fiberworld was the first group (as far as I know) to produce a full-blown fiber conference online during 2020. It was truly an amazing achievement, bringing a very successful event together in a few weeks with a very energetic team. And this year, it has expanded with even more classes, vendors, events, lounges, trivia contest, pajama party…I’m amazed at the master schedule with its variety of offerings!

I am teaching four classes which I will overview here.

Color Cables paths.jpg

Crisscrossing the Rainbow: Color Cables

This class begins with a basic one color cable against a different background to teach you the intarsia wrapping technique of colors to prevent holes. But it quickly moves to mind blowing when you begin to see how different effects are achieved depending on which colors are introduced in different configurations at the beginning. See those two orange and blue cable patterns below? Those are the SAME cable pattern, but the visual effects created are very different due to different sequence of color placement at the beginning. This class will teach what to look for in a cable chart, how to trace the columns and convert into color, and how experimentation with color introduction at different places changes the end effect.
Skills: Participants should be able to accomplish basic long tail cast-on, and basic stitches such as knit, purl, K2tog, SSK, yo, know how to do a basic rope cable and how to read knitting charts with cable symbols.

Class is Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 11:15AM Eastern Standard Time.

I’ll Put a Hex on You!: Hexagon Stitch and Other Knit One Below Textures

Check Pattern

Check Pattern

English Rose

English Rose

Knitting in the Stitch below is a stitch that creates a wide variety of textural interest. You will first learn the K1 Below technique by working the Check Stitch in two colors (see left image above). That will enable you to work other K1 Below textures such as English Rose (see right image above) outside of class. I’ve included several K1 Below stitch patterns in the handout. After working the check pattern, I teach you the Hexagon Stitch (see images below) which is a bit trickier. I’ve also figured out how to do the Hexagon stitch in the round, so you’ll receive those instructions. Finally I will teach you a complex, but fantastic, cast on for expansive fabrics such as the Hexagon Stitch or Brioche.

Jump into retro classic knitting with Argyle diamonds! In this class, you will learn the classic technique of knitting Argyle flat, along with a seaming method that makes the seam nearly invisible and not bulky. You will practice the technique knitting an Argyle sample swatch (see above), learning how to wrap yarns to prevent holes, how to add in bobbins, and other Argyle tips and tricks. You will also learn the calculations to design your own Argyle diamond patterns for different gauges. After this class, you’ll be ready to tackle your first Argyle project, like the hat or socks below!

ooops! Correcting Knitting Mistakes and learning to read you knitting

WellsOOOPS1.jpg

This is one of my favorite classes because it transforms beginning knitters into more confident and competent knitters in just two hours of telling them things that most of us learned from years of experience and examining our knitting.

Do you ever look at your knitting and say, “What happened THERE??” or picked up your knitting project and wondered “Where am I in the pattern?”-how many decreases/increases have I worked, what row was I on? Not only do you learn how to figure these things out, you also learn how to correct mistakes—when to unknit, when to rip out, and how to drop stitches down to correct a mistake many rows back.

This class will remove your knitting doubt and fear!
